Schenna Castle

Schenna Castle towers high above the village and was built in 1350 by Petermann von Schenna, a minister of the Counts of Tyrol. From 1845, it served as the ancestral seat of Archduke Johann of Austria, who subsequently had the castle restored. Today, you can not only enjoy the view over Merano and Environs, but also marvel at the impressive collection of artworks and historical exhibits, including a collection of weapons and paintings from different eras.

Mausoleum of Archduke Johann

A building next to Schenna Castle that is sure to catch your eye on your #realtime holiday: the mausoleum of Archduke Johann, which sits in a picturesque park above the village. It was built between 1860 and 1869 according to the plans of Viennese architect Moritz Wappler and is the final resting place of the Archduke, known as a reformer, and his family. The building is also one of the earliest and most successful examples of neoclassicism in South Tyrol.

Schenna Waalweg trail

The almost 11km-long Schenna Waalweg trail takes you along the old irrigation channels through idyllic forests and orchards from Verdins to Schenna. In addition to exciting insights into the ancient irrigation system used since the 13th century, this easy and leisurely tour also rewards you with impressive views of Merano and Environs.

Trauttmansdorff Castle

The Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle, known far beyond the borders of South Tyrol, extend over 12 hectares and are home to more than 80 themed garden landscapes with plants from around the globe. Special highlights are the sun garden with its Mediterranean flora and the Touriseum inside the castle, which explores the history of tourism in the region. In the picturesque gardens, which were awarded the title of “International Garden of the Year” in 2013, you’ll make new, fascinating discoveries every time you visit – no matter the season. By the way: Empress Sissi once also enjoyed strolling and lingering on the promenades around the palace.

Tappeiner promenade

This 6.1-kilometre panoramic promenade lets you stroll from Merano across the Mediterranean slopes of Mt Küchelberg to the small village of Gratsch – with magnificent views of the city and the surrounding mountains. The path was donated by spa physician Franz Tappeiner from Val Venosta/Vinschgau, who made a significant contribution to Merano’s development into a popular spa resort.

Terme Merano

As a modern wellness centre in the heart of the spa town, Terme Merano spoils you with 25 pools with a total water surface of 15,000m2, a large sauna area, a well-equipped gym, and the holistic spa with medical area. The star of it all: the especially mineral-rich and health-promoting thermal water from the springs on Mt San Vigilio/Vigiljoch near Lana, which is used for thermal inhalations and baths. The impressive architecture of the thermal baths is an attraction in its own right.

Mt Picco Ivigna/Ifinger

At 2,581 metres high, imposing Mt Picco Ivigna/Ifinger is the highest peak in the Schenna area and offers you a fascinating panoramic view of the Dolomites and the surrounding mountains. Starting from the mountain station of Merano 2000, you have two options for your summit tour: foot-sure hikers can set their sights on the small Picco Ivigna/Ifinger peak, while experienced via ferrata fans can tackle the main peak, which is 25m higher. Afterwards, you can reward yourself for your efforts with a refreshment break at Kuhleiten hut.

Tirol Castle

In the medieval Tirol Castle, situated above Dorf Tirol, you can explore the historical centre of the Tyrol region. The castle, ancestral seat of the Counts of Tyrol, was built between 1140 and 1160. It was the residence of the region’s rulers until the 15th century, when the administration was moved to Innsbruck. Today, it’s home to the South Tyrolean Museum of Culture and Provincial History. Next to it is the Bird Rescue Centre, another highlight in Merano and Environs. At 2 daily flight shows with birds of prey such as eagles, vultures, owls, and buzzards, you can experience the majestic queens and kings of the skies up close. Afterwards, you can walk through the rescue centre, where injured and helpless birds are nursed back to health before being released back into the wild.
